The 2023 college football season is the last one that will see the traditional Big Ten, with 14 teams in two divisions. Once four of the former Pac-12 teams join in 2024, the whole makeup of the conference will be different. This year, Michigan comes in as the two-time defending conference champs, but they are under a dark shadow as coach Jim Harbaugh likely faces severe discipline for a Level I violation. Even if that discipline comes after the 2023 season, the blowback will influence the team. Ohio State also made the College Football Playoff last year, despite not even making the Big Ten Championship, and they came within a missed field goal of knocking off the eventual national champions in their semifinal. What can we expect from Big Ten football this year? Check out our NCAAF betting predictions as you start to make your college football betting odds and plans.
College Football Betting Odds: Top 5 Bold Predictions for Big Ten Football in 2023
Michigan will make it three titles in three seasons
You can’t make it in college football without a thick skin, and that goes for players as well as coaches. I see the Wolverines drowning out the noise and putting together another elite season. Tailbacks Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards are back, as is starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The running game was the emphasis for the Michigan offense last year, which left McCarthy a bit taken aback in the national semifinal when TCU initially was able to slow their running game. McCarthy’s top receiver, Ronnie Bell, from last year is now in the NFL. Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson are the top wideouts this year, and tight end Colston Loveland will join them in giving McCarthy targets. On defense, Will Johnson doesn’t have another shutdown cornerback opposite him in the formation, but Mike Sainristil will get the first shot.

Ohio State will join Michigan in the CFP again
I see Ohio State putting together another one-loss season (to Michigan) and getting back in the national semifinals. At wide receiver, Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Eguka are an elite pair, and TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams deliver a punishing running game. Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are still competing to replace C.J. Stroud at quarterback, and the Buckeyes have to replace three starters on the O-line, but given the level of competition they face, they should be able to figure those issues out in time for Big Ten play.

Penn State comes up just short once again
It’s been seven years since the Nittany Lions won a Big Ten title. Once again, the defense will be outstanding, with linebacker Abdul Carter, edge rusher Chop Robinson and shutdown corner Kalen King. The O-line is elite, so tailbacks Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton should find plenty of holes to run through. Sean Clifford has gone, so the new quarterback is blue-chip recruit Drew Allar – who won’t have much time to grow into the role. His wide receivers are KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Harrison Wallace, and Kent State transfer Dante Cephas – overall, an inexperienced but talented trio.

Wisconsin wins the Big Ten West
Luke Fickell replaces Paul Chryst at head coach after taking Cincinnati to the College Football Playoff. Fickell brought in Phil Longo as offensive coordinator, which means that the Badgers’ longtime focus on pounding the ball will change to the Air Raid. SMU transfer Tanner Mordecai will start at quarterback as Graham Mertz transferred out. Several quality receivers joined Mordecai through the transfer portal, but they don’t yet have a lot of experience. The defense has a lot of new faces in their front seven, and cornerback is an issue. However, in the Big Ten West, the forward pass is not nearly as much of a problem as it is in the East.

Minnesota finishes ahead of Iowa in the Big Ten West
The Golden Gophers have gone 29-10 in their last three full seasons, but the national media still isn’t quite sure that they exist. Coming into 2023, Minnesota has to replace tailback Mo Ibrahim. Sean Tyler, the Western Michigan transfer, is the likely starter, and Athan Kaliakmanis takes over at quarterback. Thanks to an increase in talent at wide receiver (Corey Crooms transferred in from Western Michigan, and Elijah Spencer came from Charlotte) the Minnesota offense should be less one-dimensional. Can the three new starters on the O-line make the difference?
