The PGA Tour regular season has come to an end for 2023, which means it’s time for the first round of the FedExCup playoffs – the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis. The course plays at par-70 and runs 7,243 yards. Running at par-70 means that the course only offers two par-5 holes – and seven of the 12 par-4 holes run more than 450 yards. This means that players who can hit the fairway off the tee and have strong approach play are more likely to do well here. TPC Southwind has some of the tightest fairways on the PGA Tour, and the course has 75 bunkers and features water hazards on 11 of the 18 holes. The average green size is about 4,300 square feet, just two-thirds the size of what golfers saw last week at Sedgefield. The weather this week is humid and hot, so balls will be flying, but the 10 inches of precipitation the course has gotten the last month should keep the course soft. Rory McIlroy
is ranked #2 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and he regularly finishes in the top ten. However, when it comes to finishing big tournaments in first place, he has a real problem on Sundays. Yes, he converted a big win at the Scottish Open, but his only other win this season was the CJ Cup. He plays terrific golf. He spends a lot of time high on leaderboards. But if you’re picking an overall winner, he doesn’t offer enough value.
Rickie Fowler
missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but that seems to have lit a fire under him. He won the Rocket Mortgage Classic and has three other top-ten finishes in his last seven tournaments, so his form is promising for the playoffs. At TPC Southwind last year, he had a terrific first round on Thursday but had a horrendous quintuple bogey on 18 at the end of his round on Saturday. He is third in total drive efficiency on the PGA Tour this season, and he will need that metric this weekend.
Xander Schauffele
is second in the PGA Tour in par-70 scoring and consistently finishes in teh top ten on leaderboards. His putting is solid, and he can notch birdies on par-4s, which makes this a promising course for him. At all four majors and the Players, he finished in the top 20 this year, and in his last 10 starts, he has gained more than eight strokes over the field.

Cam Davis
. He has yet to win a tournament this season, but he has five top-ten finishes among eight top-20 finishes in 24 events. When he isn’t in the top 20, he tends to crash out, as he has missed 11 cuts, but five of those came in his first five starts to begin 2023. His recent scores have been better: T7 at the Wyndham Championship, T10 at the 3M Open, and T17 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Davis finished 13th at this tournament last year.
