Clarke Schmidt has pitched well enough to keep the Yankees in games; he has not permitted more than three earned runs in a start since August 14 – and he’s only allowed more than three earned runs five times all season. His last two starts have come against Detroit, and the team has split the two games, losing 4-3 in ten innings on August 31 and then winning, 4-3, on Wednesday. He has struck out 13 in those two starts, walking three, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.
The Red Sox have not won a game that Kutter Crawford started since August 19, and they’ve only won in two of his starts since the calendar turned to August. His last two starts have been short and inconsistent as he has allowed 11 earned runs on 10 hits over 6 ⅓ combined innings against Houston and Tampa Bay, striking out six and walking five. Given that the Yankees will likely be full of intense passion on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in New York City, the Yankees will already have plenty of motivation, so finding plenty of balls over the fat part of the plate should lead to a big win. The Yankees have only won once in Carlos Rodon’s last six starts. Sometimes the loss has been on Rodon, as was the case on Thursday when the Tigers pounded him for seven runs on eight hits over 3 ⅔ innings. In other cases, the offense has failed to show pu, as on August 22, when he threw six solid innings of six-hit, one-run ball only to see the Washington Nationals pull out a 2-1 win. His September ERA is a mammoth 9.35, so expect to see plenty of hittable balls on Tuesday.
Nick Pivetta has bounded back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation this season for Boston. He got a three-inning save against Kansas City on September 2, limiting the Royals to a run on two hits (including a solo shot). He got a spot start against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits over 4 ⅔ innings in a 3-1 loss. As long as his outings are relatively short, he can keep the ball down, but when he sees a team the third time through the order, things start to get a bit messy. Red Sox to win.

Tanner Houck missed just over two months after taking a line drive off his face and having a metal plate inserted in his head. His first two starts after his return were decent as he allowed four earned runs on nine hits over nine combined innings against Houston and the Dodgers. His two starts in August have been more of a struggle as he has allowed nine earned runs on 15 hits over 10 ⅓ innings, striking out 10 and walking three. Even though he gets to take on a Yankee bullpen committee or a spot starter, Houck could give up plenty of offense himself. Take the over.
