NASCAR is at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a Cup Series race on the road course this Sunday. The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard is set to start at 2:30 pm Eastern time, and you can watch on NBC or listen on SiriusXM. Last week, Chris Buescher made it two Cup Series wins in a row, waiting until Monday to finish a rain-delayed race. Martin Truex Jr pushed hard at the end, but Buescher made it nine wins in a row for Ford drivers at Michigan. The Monday resumption took place at Lap 75 without Chase Elliott as he crashed out in 36th place on Lap 35. He now has to win one of the next three races to get enough points to make the postseason. Austin Cindric
offers plenty of value, but he’s not really a long shot here, so he makes a smart pick. Cindric has won five road course races in the Xfinity Series, most recently at the 2021 Indianapolis Grand Prix. In the Cup Series, he’s still looking for his first road course win, but he has come close several times. He came in sixth at Circuit of the Americas and also in the Chicago Street Race earlier in 2023. In 2022, he finished in the top ten four times in the six road course races, including a runner-up result at Indianapolis. He came in ninth in this race in 2021 while driving in the Cup Series on a part-time basis.
Chase Elliott
has all of the motivation in the world to race hard here, and he’s had a tough season to overcome. He had to miss time after a skiing injury, and he also got banned for one race. His car hasn’t been particularly fast, which means he has not been able to take advantage of some of his favorite tracks in the summer. He didn’t even finish at Michigan. However, that gave him an extra day of rest, and Elliott might be the best road course racer ever, with seven career wins.
Kyle Busch
and William Byron also have the advantage of an extra day of rest after crashing out at Michigan on Sunday and getting to go home early. Byron has improved as a road course racer, and Busch’s car, the No. 8 RCR Chevy, won twice on road courses in 2022, at Road America and the Indianapolis Grand Prix.
Shane Van Gisbergen
is back, trying to win his second Cup Series race in as many tries. He has a fast car and showed that he can come out of nowhere to win in his debut.
Ross Chastain
and Daniel Suarez both had road course wins in 2022 (Circuit of the Americas and Sonoma, respectively). Jensen Button will be at the helm of the No. 15 car with Rick Ware Racing. The formula F1 champion will have a car that has improved significantly. Kamui Kobayashi has raced in 75 Grands Prix with Formula 1, and now he comes in to drive the No. 67 Toyota for 23XI Racing, making him an interesting long shot. Then there’s Chris Buescher. Can he go three for three? Crazier things have happened.
