NFL Quarterbacks to consider in your AFC South Betting Picks

The AFC South has four teams with questions to answer at quarterback as we go into 2023. The Indianapolis Colts haven’t really solved that problem since Andrew Luck shocked the team by retiring right before the 2019 preseason. Since then, the team has had to go with Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan. Brissett did a serviceable job, and Rivers got the team to the playoffs before one of his patented clutch-game meltdowns. Wentz and Ryan showed that they are well past their primes, and the team missed the playoffs in two straight seasons when they had the tailbacks, receivers and defenses to advance. Tennessee is dealing with the aging of Ryan Tannehill, but they have a duo of young quarterbacks to consider in Malik Willis and Will Levis. Houston has drafted C.J. Stroud, which should have fans excited. Jacksonville has Trevor Lawrence, who appears to be warming up to the game speed of the NFL. But how can we rank the division’s signal-callers, and how does that influence your NFL betting? Check out our rankings.

NFL Betting News: Ranking the Starting Quarterbacks in the AFC South

Trevor Lawrence

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
#16 | 2022 Stats: 4,113 YDS – 25 TD – 8 INT – 54.5 QBR

At this point, Lawrence has a half-season of solid football on his resume; he started 2022 well but made some crucial errors. After the setback to Kansas City in the regular season, ball security got much better for him, and in the Jaguars’ playoff game against the Chiefs, he looked much more dangerous. Having Doug Pederson as his coach has rejuvenated his confidence after a year suffering under Urban Meyer. Calvin Ridley has come to town to give him an elite wide receiver, and the offense was already scary-good.

Bet on the Jaguars!

Gardner Minshew

Team: Indianapolis Colts
#10 | 2022 Stats: 663 YDS – 3 TD – 3 INT – 39.7 QBR

Minshew is another caretaker quarterback, waiting for rookie Anthony Richardson to get ready for the NFL. Minshew wowed observers in his rookie season in Jacksonville but then got exposed in 2020. To be fair, the Jaguars had a lot fewer weapons on offense then than they do now. Minshew then spent two seasons backing up Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, and Shane Steichen, his OC with the Eagles, is now with the Colts. He has looked decent in training camp, and if the team can make Jonathan Taylor happy (the star tailback has requested a trade and has a public feud going with owner Jim Irsay), the team should have offensive balance.

Bet on the Colts!

Ryan Tannehill

Team: Tennessee Titans
#17 | 2022 Stats: 2,536 YDS – 13 TD – 6 INT – 49.1 QBR

Despite having Levis and Willis on the roster, duking it out for the backup role, Tannehill should begin the season as the starter. He has an elite receiver in 2023 as the team added DeAndre Hopkins. Last year, the receiving talent was subpar, but in 2021, when he still had A.J. Brown, he threw for 3,819 yards with a 33:7 TD:INT ratio. The team also has Derrick Henry coming back, but we still really don’t know if he’s recovered fully from the foot injury that ended his 2021 season. Tannehill isn’t particularly mobile, and the deep ball isn’t really part of his repertoire. Levis has looked good in camp, and there are rumblings that the team may try to ship Willis to a team with a real depth problem at quarterback, such as the Arizona Cardinals.

Bet on the Titans!

C.J. Stroud

Team: Houston Texans
#7 | 2022 Stats: 3,688 YDS – 41 TD – 6 INT – 177.7 QBR

Davis Mills has been the starter for a season and a half. As a rookie, Mills showed some potential, but in a full season as the starter, it became clear that Mills didn’t have what it took to be a franchise quarterback, and the Texans took Stroud with the second overall pick in April’s draft. Stroud has a higher ceiling than Mills, so I don’t see it taking the Texans long to give Stroud the keys. A problem is the lack of talent around Stroud on offense. The defense is better, as the team added Will Anderson Jr and Sheldon Rankin to help stop the run, and Jerry Hughes had nine sacks a year ago. The cupboard on offense, though, is bare, so Stroud will have a tough time stringing together drives as he learns how to play in the NFL.

Bet on the Texans!
