Ryder Cup Betting Analysis one month before tournament Begins

Golf Lines: 2023 Ryder Cup Betting Analysis one month before Tournament Begins

The last weekend of September will bring the 2023 Ryder Cup, set for the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. This is the first Ryder Cup since LIV Golf came onto the scene and disrupted the hegemony of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. We now know the automatic qualifiers and captain’s picks for the U.S. team, but we are still waiting for the full roster from the European side. Even so, let’s look at what we know and talk about how this might influence your Ryder Cup betting on one of golf’s more unique events.

Who else will play for Team Europe?

Team USA uses the top six golfers in the PGA points rankings as automatic qualifiers, and the captain picks the other six. Team Europe uses the top three eligible players from the European Points List, the top three eligible players from the World Points List, and six captain’s picks. We will know the last two automatic qualifiers for Team Europe by September 3, at which point Donald will have to make his picks.

Sepp Straka, Robert MacIntyre, and Adrian Meronk have all played extremely well on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, and Aaron Rai is someone who could end up on this squad as well, as he made it to the FedExCup playoffs. The last two or three spots on the European roster will not have as much individual quality as their U.S. counterparts, due simply to a lack of depth. However, European players have found ways to play above their quality level in this event. Consider Francesco Molinari, who really hasn’t done much since the 2019 Masters, when he fell off the table. He was essential to Team Europe’s win in Paris – and with this Ryder Cup in Italy, Molinari should have special motivation to play well.

Donald won’t have access to such European Ryder Cup heroes from the past as Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Sergio Garcia, who quit the DP World Tour, and as such, are no longer eligible to compete in the Ryder Cup.

What was surprising about Team USA’s captain’s picks?

Adding Brooks Koepka was not a surprise. Even though Koepka went to LIV Golf and therefore lost the chance to accrue points for automatic qualification, he did win his third PGA Championship in May at Oak Hill Country Club in NEw York state. He also tied for second at the Masters this year after rehabbing a knee injury. He finished T17 at the U.S. Open and T64 at the Open Championship. Even playing for LIV Golf, with his major results, Koepka was still seventh in the rankings, 29 points back of Xander Schauffele.

Justin Thomas was a surprising pick. He has won the PGA Championship twice, but this year, he came in 71st in the FedExCup points standings, one point out of the playoffs. In three of the four 2023 majors, he missed the cut. In 20 starts, he finished in the top ten three times. Thomas was picked over Cameron Young (the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year), Denny McCarthy, and Keegan Bradley, all of whom had more Ryder Cup points than Thomas. Lucas Glover had two PGA Tour wins late in the season but was left off. Thomas has been terrific in past Ryder Cups, posting a 6-2-1 record in two previous appearances. In the Presidents Cup, he has a 10-3-2 record in three events. So we’ll see if his addition pays off.
