Now that the Pac-12 has effectively exploded and the conference realignment carousel seems to have settled, at least for a few days, let’s turn our sports betting attention back to the actual games on tap for 2023. The SEC remains the premier conference in college football, particularly the West Division, which for one more year will have the likes of Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M whaling on each other week in and week out. The SEC East has started catching up, with Georgia becoming the class of the conference and Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida also on the rise. Let’s look at some of the best action scheduled for this fall in SEC play to consider in your NCAA Football betting odds.

NCAA Football Betting News: Top SEC Betting Games for 2023

Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators

Week 3
When: Saturday, September 16 at 7:00pm ET
Where: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville, FL

The Volunteers had lost five straight to the Gators until last year, when Tennessee ended the skid. Tennessee leads the all-time rivalry, 31-21. The Gators started off 2022 in solid fashion, beating Utah at home to start the year, but they would only win five more games all season. They also saw quarterback Anthony Richardson head off to the NFL draft, where he would go in the top five to the Indianapolis Colts. The two-headed tandem of Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne returns at tailback after combining for 1,560 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. We still don’t know if Jack Miller or Graham Mertz, the Wisconsin transfer, will start at quarterback. On defense, Florida was last in the conference in third-down defense, permitting 49.1% of conversions. The Gators brought in Austin Armstrong at DC, and he will have to work to get those points per game down; in six of the Gators’ seven losses, the defense permitted at least 30 points.

Tennessee also has to replace a quarterback, with Hendon Hooker moving on. Joe Milton III, a senior, has a cannon arm and a 64.6% career completion percentage. He had a terrific game against Clemson in the Orange Bowl, and he has wide receivers Bru McCoy and Squirrel White returning; the duo combined for 1,148 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2022. Tailbacks Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright, and Dylan Sampson ran for a combined 29 touchdowns and almost 2,000 yards, so the Volunteers can pound the ball as well. The Tennessee defense finished the season strong, and pass rushers Tyler Baron, Roman Harrison and Omari Thomas all return. Volunteers to win.

Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide

Week 4
When: Saturday, September 23 at TBD
Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL

Ole Miss is the first SEC opponent on the Alabama slate. They went 8-5 (4-4 SEC) last year, losing in the Texas Bowl to Texas Tech by 17. They started out 7-0 before hitting some reality in SEC West play, going 1-4 down the stretch before that bowl game embarrassment. Quarterback Luke Altmyer left through the transfer portal, but Walker Howard has transferred in from LSU to take the helm. Tailback Quinshon Judkins might be the best tailback in the SEC; last year, he ran for 1,567 yards and scored 16 touchdowns as a true freshman, and that came while sharing duties with Zach Evans, who ran for 936 yards of his own. Ulysses Bentley transferred in from SMU, where he put up big numbers in the AAC.

Alabama went 11-2 (6-2 SEC), with both losses coming on the road and in overtime (at Tennessee and at LSU). That record conceals a scary win against a Texas A&M team that was not very good and a last-minute win over a Texas team that couldn’t do much damage in the Big 12. They did recover to beat Big 12 champions Kansas State, 45-20, but the Wildcats were rolling with a backup quarterback. Alabama has to reload at quarterback after the departure of Bryce Young, but they have shown that they can reload well. Jalen Milroe looks like the placeholder until Julian Sayin comes in 2024. Milroe ran for 91 yards in relief of an injured Young in a 49-26 win over Arkansas. Ty Simpson has a more accurate arm, but he hurt his elbow in the off-season. Tyler Buchner transferred in from Notre Dame, but he is more dangerous with his legs than he is with his arms. Whichever Nick Saban chooses, the Tide will have to work harder for their wins than they are used to doing. Alabama to win.
